He assumed editorship of several magazines, succeeding renowned editor Raymond A. Palmer in 1950, and established the pulp magazine Mammoth Detective Stories. Browne attempted to restore a measure of realism into the predominantly fantastic science fiction style that was being published in Amazing Stories during the period. In 1956 he left Ziff-Davis for Hollywood, where he wrote radio plays and scripts for television and film, including The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre (1967), four episodes of Mission: Impossible (1971–73) and Capone (1975).

Psycho is significant in both Bloch’s career and the pantheon of American crime and horror fiction for its approach to psychological horror. The broader, more fantastical elements of Bloch’s previous work are here rejected in favour of a Gothic psychodrama involving strong Freudian elements – the character Norman Bates dresses up as his deceased mother, with whom he had an intense and submissive relationship.
