In some cases, however, this may not be possible (due, for example, to the heterogeneity of the studies) and the review provides more of a descriptive listing of results rather than a full integrative synthesis (see ‘thematic summaries’ in Chapter 9). A synthesis is meant to be an integration of findings from trustworthy and relevant studies that help to answer the review question.
